As mentioned in yesterday’s article Celebrities Drink Acai For Good Health, Veev acai berry liquor donates $1 from every bottle sold to the Sustainable Acai Project.  I did some research into the Sustainable Acai Project and found that, contrary to my understanding, The Sustainable Acai Project (a.k.s. Sambazon) is not a registered nonprofit organization, however they still have a very important mission and do good work with the people of Brazil.

The Sustainable Acai Project promotes the sustainable management of the Brazilian Amazon.  They work with over 940 low-income families in the Brazilian rainforest which cover over 66,000 acres of protected acai berry land in the Varzea Eco-region of the rainforest.  The Sustainable Acai Project purchases fair trade, organic, sustainable harvested acai berry fruit and turns it into acai pulp, acai beverages, and acai supplements for re-sale in the United States.

This is a very important step in maintaining stability in the Amazon rainforest and protecting it from deforestation being that the acai berry is a non-timber, renewable fruit that helps to improve local economic conditions.

Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest occurs first for the tropical wood of the rare palm trees, and secondly for the delicacy Heart of Palm.  Heart of Palm comes from the core of the acai palm, and harvesters of this food are paid $1 for every tree that it cut down.

Thanks to the increasing popularity of the acai berry, and the recent celebrity status it has achieved on Oprah and Rachel Ray, being named:

2. Fruit of the Year, and

The acai berry has also been on ABC News with Matt Lauer, and in celebrity magazines around the world.  Because of this publicity and exposure production of the acai berry is increasing, and it is more profitable for Brazilian natives to harvest acai berries rather than deforest the rainforest for hearts of palm.
