Just yesterday I read about a new Cranberry Juice Diet.  The creator of the diet says that if you drink nothing but cranberry juice for seven (7) days then you will drop 10 pounds. Well, that may be true, but what you are not told is that Cranberry Juice is full of sugar, and if you consume nothing but cranberry juice for 10 days you will feel absolutely awful.  There will be no food in your system to balance out the large intake of pure sugar.  Your body will be on a “sugar high” for about 20 minutes, then a “sugar low” for another 20, and you will not be able to balance your sugar for about an hour after each large consumption of juice.

On top of the energy highs and lows the weight you are losing is about 90% water weight.  That means on Monday morning, when you are back to the weekly grind, you will gain back 90% of the weight you just “lost”.  Unfortunately, this is what fad diets do.  They eliminate weight for an extremely short period of time, until you are no longer on them.

When looking for a diet program it is important to stay away from fad diets or anything that resembles a fad diet.  A fad diet is almost anything that promise massive weight loss results with minimal time and effort.  As mentioned above, many of these fad weight loss plans seem to work great initially, then the weight returns quickly, and many times doubles.  Additionally, fad diets have been known to present serious health risks.

How to Spot a Fad Diet


To begin, ask yourself the following questions. If you answer yes to more than one question, there is a good chance that the diet is a fad diet.

  • Does it make claims that sound too good to be true?
  • Does it eliminate any of the five (5) food groups?
  • Does it promise a quick and speedy weight loss?
  • Does it promise weight loss without any physical activity?
  • Does it require a drastic change in eating patterns?
