Timothy  Church, MD, PhD, a Louisiana State University researcher points out that  is easier,  “to cut 500 calories out of your daily intake than to spend  an hour at the gym every day burning 500 calories.”  He goes on to  point out that the most successful weight loss plans have,  “a balance  of diet and exercise.”</p>
<p>If you are feeling groggy every day and need to increase your energy  levels, adding more exercise and physical activity in your life should  be your plan.  Exercising increases the amounts of dopamine and nor-epinephrine your body produces, thus increasing your energy levels.</p>
<p>If you were looking to prevent heart disease, adjusting your diet  would be the most effective way of addressing that problem.  Dr. William  Harris, director of cardiovascular research at the University of South  Dakota recommends adding foods that are “high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids” to  your diet.  Adding these foods has shown a decrease of heart disease  risk by 64 percent in recent studies.</p>
<p>If you are at risk for developing diabetes or would like to improve  your current diabetic condition, adding exercise or exercising longer  would be the cure!  Reaching a healthy weight through diet and exercise  is the best way to deal with diabetes.  When you add more exercise and  physical activity you are giving yourself an edge. Active muscles burn  up glucose from the blood for fuel, which helps keep blood sugar levels  stable.</p>
<p>If you are feeling blue, crabby, or depressed, exercise is the way to  go.  Exercise increases the amount of endorphins your body produces;  endorphins help to improve your mood and a good way to release stress.</p>

<p>A national survey measured where the majority of our calories come from, and they discovered that most of our calories come from drinking sodas! More people said they drink sodas (7.1%) than said they eat vegetables (6.5%) or chicken/fish (5.7%). Think about this, if you consumed an average of 2,500 calories a day, and you cut 7 percent of your calories, you’d automatically drop down to 2,325, a difference that would save you 1.5 pounds per month. That could be an average of 18 pounds a year- just by avoiding the soft drink machine.</p>

<p>In a recent study, researchers took group of 173 overweight women and put through diet and nutrition training using mainstream diet programs. They then followed them for 10 months, recording their dietary and body composition for up to 12 months. All women in the program lost weight, but those drinking more water lost more weight. Those who drank more than 1 liter of water per day (nearly 4½ cups) lost an extra 5.07 pounds in 12 months.</p>

<p>Smoothies take little time to make (so you can quash your hunger pangs quickly), they’re packed with nutrition (especially if you start with Greek yogurt and add berries, whey protein, and some flax), and their thickness takes up a lot of space in your stomach, crowding out the Doritos. In fact, researchers at Purdue University found that people stayed fuller longer when they drank thick drinks than when they drank thin ones, and a study at Penn State found that people who drank yogurt shakes that had been blended until they doubled in volume ate 96 fewer calories a day than those consuming thinner drinks.</p>

<p>While even 100 percent juice has its problems, juice drinks and their ilk are the worse offenders. By cutting those tricky drinks out of your diet you’ll lose 19 pounds in a year!</p>

<p>Researchers studied coffee habits in New York and found that two-thirds of Starbucks’ customers opted for blended coffee drinks over regular brewed coffee or tea. The average caloric impact of the blended drinks was 239 calories. The regular coffee or tea, by comparison, was only 63 calories after factoring in added cream and sugar. So even if you like your coffee sweet and light, you can strip away 176 calories every day, just by making this one swap.</p>

<p>The days of long leisurely lunch hours are long gone, for most people the lunch hour has become a time to catch up on daily errands, leaving drive through, take out, and other fast food restaurants the popular and convenient choice for much of the work force, especially working women. Women are often expected to work a 40 hour work week, like their male counter parts but they are still expected to do many of the household chores/errands like going to the dry cleaners, the pharmacy, and the super market, leaving the drive through lane the only option.</p>
<p>A recent “Journal of American Dietetic Association” study found that 59% of women eat their lunch while they are driving or otherwise occupied. Working women should be weary, what they shave off the time clock might reappear on their waists lines and thighs. The same study cited that those who patronize fast food restaurants more than twice a week tend to be at least 10 pounds more than those who eat out less often. These less healthy, albeit convenient, lunches can have problems far worse than having to go up a size- eating too much fast food puts you at a greater risk for diabetes, heart disease, and colon cancer.</p>
<p>Not to worry! We have found several alternatives to the combo meal or the super sized meals that are just as easy to get and have far less calories:</p>
<p><strong>Burger King:</strong></p>
<p>Veggie burger with cheese, lettuce, tomato and ketchup: garden salad with ½ packet of light Italian dressing. About 550 calories</p>
<p><strong>McDonalds:</strong></p>
<p>Premium Southwest Salad with Grilled Chicken with ½ packet of creamy Southwest dressing; fruit and yogurt parfait (without the granola). About 500 calories</p>
<p><strong>Quiznos: </strong></p>
<p>Pan Asian Chicken Chopped Salad, order the dressing on the side use half of it or as for fat-free balsamic vinaigrette for a healthier option. About 330 calories</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Panera Bread: </strong></p>
<p>Order a “You Pick Two” combo of Lowfat Vegetarian Black Bean soup and half a Mediterranean Salmon Salad. About 350 calories</p>
<p><strong>Subway: </strong></p>
<p>Six inch Subway Veggie Patty sandwich on toasted wheat bread with lettuce, tomato, two slices provolone, plus any other uncooked veggies, topped with mustard and/or vinegar. About 450 calories</p>
<p><strong>Taco Bell</strong>:</p>
<p>Fresco Bean Burrito with a side of guacamole -it contains beneficial fat. About 400 calories</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Wendy’s:</strong></p>
<p>Small chili with a side salad tossed with 1 packet of fat-free French dressing and a half order of mandarin oranges. About 400 calories</p>
<p>If these don’t appeal to you, you can still order your favorite burger, just skip the fries- they add about 1200 calories to your meal. Instead of a soft drink order an unsweetened Iced Tea.</p>
