In an ideal world, we would all have enough time to exercise every day for at least 30 minutes and we would all make the right choices when deciding what to eat.  We don’t live in an ideal world. The reality is we live in a world where people have to work two jobs, some have to work through lunch making take out an only option.  When you have to juggle carpools, neighborhood meetings, taking kids to-and-from sporting events and dance recitals while working it doesn’t leave a lot of time for hitting the gym.

If your goal is to simply loose weight, dieting wins out. Timothy Church, MD, PhD, a Louisiana State University researcher points out that is easier,  “to cut 500 calories out of your daily intake than to spend an hour at the gym every day burning 500 calories.”  He goes on to point out that the most successful weight loss plans have,  “a balance of diet and exercise.”

If you are feeling groggy every day and need to increase your energy levels, adding more exercise and physical activity in your life should be your plan.  Exercising increases the amounts of dopamine and nor-epinephrine your body produces, thus increasing your energy levels.

If you were looking to prevent heart disease, adjusting your diet would be the most effective way of addressing that problem.  Dr. William Harris, director of cardiovascular research at the University of South Dakota recommends adding foods that are “high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids” to your diet.  Adding these foods has shown a decrease of heart disease risk by 64 percent in recent studies.

If you are at risk for developing diabetes or would like to improve your current diabetic condition, adding exercise or exercising longer would be the cure!  Reaching a healthy weight through diet and exercise is the best way to deal with diabetes.  When you add more exercise and physical activity you are giving yourself an edge. Active muscles burn up glucose from the blood for fuel, which helps keep blood sugar levels stable.

If you are feeling blue, crabby, or depressed, exercise is the way to go.  Exercise increases the amount of endorphins your body produces; endorphins help to improve your mood and a good way to release stress.

We all know that once we get comfortable in a relationship we make new habits together.  Most of them not the best for weight loss, our new years diet, or a healthy body/mind.

You always eat out

It’s natural to have a bonding experience over food.  But, you can do this at home.  Try going to the grocery with your loved one and picking out a meal you will cook together.  This can lead to a great experience and a slimmer waist!

It’s hard getting out of bed

Many studies have shown that once you have been together a couple of years you are more concerned about couple activities and less with working out or taking a walk by yourself.  Stop laying on the couch together and plan trips to the park, zoo, or even the mall!

Be happy, but go to the gym

Being in a relationship should make you happy and have a better outlook on life.  But don’t slack when it comes to staying healthy and taking care of your body.  Try putting a post it note on your mirror and looking at yourself when you get out of the shower.  Is this what you want to look like for your spouse?  or more important yourself?  Get out and do something together!
